What is the PTA?
The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) connects families, schools, and communities to promote student success. As a volunteer, you’ll play a key role in making your school a better place for everyone.
PTAs are front and center when it comes to organizing events, supporting teachers, and advocating for better education policies.
Some of this work takes place locally, while other tasks are accomplished at the state or national level. There are also several different PTA levels to support these initiatives.
PTA structure: How it all fits together

Why each PTA level matters
Every different PTA level has a critical role to play in improving educational experiences and outcomes:
- National PTA: Influences federal policies and provides national programs.
- State PTA: Adapts national initiatives to state needs and advocates for local schools.
- Regional/District PTA: Bridges communication between state and local PTAs.
- Local PTA: Directly impacts your child’s school through different fundraising projects, community events, and support.
How these levels work together
A few key processes need to happen for PTAs at different levels to support each other. Here are some of them:
- Dues apportionment: A portion of your dues goes to local, state, and national PTAs to fund programs at each level. When local PTAs fundraise, they also pay fees to each level to help support these broader initiatives.
- Sharing resources: Training, toolkits, and advocacy materials are distributed from national to local PTAs, down through the state and regional or district levels.
- Advocacy: Different levels work together to influence education policy. While the national PTA helps set priorities and guidelines for smaller PTAs across the country, local PTAs can also push for community-level changes.
