Congratulations! You’re about to make a difference in your school community.

Joining the PTA is about much more than minutes and meetings—you’re now part of an organization that helps create a positive environment for students to thrive.

What is the PTA?

The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) connects families, schools, and communities to promote student success. As a volunteer, you’ll play a key role in making your school a better place for everyone.

PTAs are front and center when it comes to organizing events, supporting teachers, and advocating for better education policies.

Some of this work takes place locally, while other tasks are accomplished at the state or national level. There are also several different PTA levels to support these initiatives.

PTA structure: How it all fits together

This chart shows you what each different PTA level in the U.S. is responsible for and how it contributes to student success across the country:

LevelWhat They DoKey InitiativesHow They Support You
National PTAAdvocates for education at the federal level, shaping nationwide policies and programs.Lobbying for education funding

Creating national awareness campaigns (e.g., arts in education, digital safety)
Provides toolkits, leadership training, and nationwide programs that local PTAs can implement.
State PTAsAdvocate for state-level education policies and provide direct support to regional and local PTAs.State-specific advocacy efforts

Advocating for school-specific needs
Offer a direct way to get involved in your child’s school, influence local decisions, and build community connections.

Why each PTA level matters

Every different PTA level has a critical role to play in improving educational experiences and outcomes:

  • National PTA: Influences federal policies and provides national programs.
  • State PTA: Adapts national initiatives to state needs and advocates for local schools.
  • Regional/District PTA: Bridges communication between state and local PTAs.
  • Local PTA: Directly impacts your child’s school through different fundraising projects, community events, and support.

How these levels work together

A few key processes need to happen for PTAs at different levels to support each other. Here are some of them:

  • Dues apportionment: A portion of your dues goes to local, state, and national PTAs to fund programs at each level. When local PTAs fundraise, they also pay fees to each level to help support these broader initiatives.
  • Sharing resources: Training, toolkits, and advocacy materials are distributed from national to local PTAs, down through the state and regional or district levels.
  • Advocacy: Different levels work together to influence education policy. While the national PTA helps set priorities and guidelines for smaller PTAs across the country, local PTAs can also push for community-level changes.

Why your role matters

As a new PTA member, you have several exciting opportunities:

  • Make a difference: Your time and skills directly benefit students, teachers, and families.
  • Build skills: Gain leadership, event planning, and organizational experience.
  • Strengthen community: Connect with other parents and school staff to create a positive environment.

Ready to get started?

As you start your journey with the PTA, keep these useful reminders in mind:

  • You’re not alone: Support and resources are available at every level.
  • Every bit helps: Whether you have an hour a week or an hour a month, your contribution counts.
  • Embrace your community: Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and make lasting connections.

Welcome aboard—your PTA journey starts here!

Reward Students with Experiences Instead of Trinkets

Trinkets are common rewards for K-12 students who participate in fundraisers—but they aren’t the most memorable. Let the FutureFund team show you why using experiences as rewards can be more meaningful in the long run, and why it’s often more cost-effective as well.
